Iconcal 2.1.1 update now available. Both major and minor bugfixes. Changelog:

• Fixed crashing that was occurring while the app was in the background, causing load times to be longer.

• Fixed a rare crash when deleting custom icons.

• Fixed a bug with certain repeating events not being properly saved when edited.

• Optimizations for the UI.

• A few other minor bugfixes.

Known issues:

• Certain “Custom” repeating events created in external computer programs (Google Calendar, Apple’s OSX Calendar program, etc.) are not fully compatible with Iconcal. We are working on adding compatibility for each of these.

• Custom icons are sometimes slow to load, or do not display properly with iCloud syncing turned on.

Wow! That took a LOT longer to develop than expected. Sorry, everyone. Turns out Apple’s iCloud & iOS calendaring SDK are sorely lacking.

On the upside, now that most of the behind-the-scenes calendaring and syncing code is done, we can pump out updates much faster.

Short term plans:

• In-app icon store (along with frequent premium & free icon packs)

One of the coolest things about digital distribution is content updates. Say… 3 months after you pick up a dog/cat from the animal shelter, someone doesn’t come by and say “Hey, you know how your pet has that problem with urinating everywhere? Well, we fixed that. Here’s a better version.”

Anyways, some sort of bad news first, but then some way better news after:

Bad news: we’re getting rid of the in-app Google Cal Sync. But don’t freak out! We have something better, we promise. Too many people were having crashes/problems with the current Google Sync, and it was proving incredibly difficult to reproduce those issues due to the extreme differences that everybody could have in their scheduling. Not to mention the gigantic difference in the way Google Calendar and iconcal handle data.

The good news: We are currently in the pre-alpha stage of adding iOS calendar syncing fuctionality. What does this mean? Well, it means:

* You will be able to import all of your events from your iOS device’s default calendar into IconCal.

* Siri support for IconCal (no icons through siri, obviously). You tell Siri you have a meeting, and it will show up in IconCal next time you open it.

* Full iCloud support. All of your events (including icons), and custom made icons will be saved to your account’s iCloud. Custom made icons are handled internally in IconCal, whilst events, and their associated (and unassociated) icons are pushed to iOS calendar and backed up to iCloud from there.

* Google Cal, CalDAV, Microsoft Outlook, and basically any other calendar that is compatible with your iOS device will now sync with IconCal. I’m working on a video tutorial of how this is done. But basically, if you already use those calendars to sync with the iOS calendar, you don’t have to do anything extra. They will all sync, with IconCal (icons included, thought the icons will only actually display in IconCal, obviously).

We’re still trying to keep IconCal as user friendly as possible, whist giving some back-end power user support for those who need the extra features. At its core, IconCal is still an easy to use drag-and-drop icon based calendar, where you really don’t have to enter in text/time data if you don’t want to, but the option is still available to you if you need it.

After we’re finished up with iOS syncing, we plan on adding a whole ton more icon content (we more than doubled the number of our built-in icons in 2.0), both premium and free, so keep an eye out for that. If you have any ideas for icon packs you’d like to see, please comment/post/email and let us know! We care a lot about user feedback!

In order to get full compatibility with iCloud, we have to change our database from sqlite to core data. The danger of doing that is data loss on update. So we’re really spending our time on bug testing making sure data loss doesn’t occur… as that is literally the worst possible thing that could happen in our app (aside from iconcal somehow turning your iPhone into an atom bomb).

So that’s why 2.1 is taking so long. Hopefully we can get all of that ironed out. But there is always a chance that there is something that slips through the cracks and we don’t catch. It is ALWAYS a good idea to backup your device via iTunes (actually backing it up, not syncing it: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766). This is a good practice before updating any app where you store important data, as iOS’s update system isn’t flawless (like all technology - don’t hate me Apple).

We’re working on iconcal 2.1! We’ll be implementing iCloud support - allowing you to backup and sync your data across your iOS devices. We’ll also be fixing the month view icons so they appear chronologically depending on how you have your events set up. A little bit further off is a more robust in-app icon store. We should be adding additional icon packs before then however. Keep an eye out!

Another update is in the pipes and should be live in the iTunes store within a few days. This will fix another rare issue where some users were losing some data. The update should restore the lost data. A number of other bugfixes are included including a bug causing the associated icon to not display properly.

Iconcal 2.0.2 has been approved and should be appearing in the iTunes store anytime now. Sorry for the delay! Had to make sure nobody was going to lose their data!

2.0.2 fixes an issue that was causing some people to lose data on updating iconcal.

Next few updates we plan on adding a few small features, continuing to fix bugs, and adding a much better icon store. We’ll be adding loads more icon packs as well! Keep an eye out and don’t forget to rate the app if you like it! Thanks for the great feedback. Keep it coming - we read and consider every bit.

A 2.0.1 update should be hitting the app store soon.

This fixes a few rare issues with alerts not triggering properly.

Already working on the next patch which should also be a bugfix patch, but we might also be able to squeeze a new feature or two in there.

EDIT: The update went live with a huge bug that caused all icon data to be wiped. We pulled the update from the store as fast as we could. None of this happened during our extensive testing before submitting the app to Apple, so we’re not sure what or how exactly this happened. We’re looking into it and hope to get an update out asap.

We are deeply sorry for anybody who updated within the short time the update was live. If you have a recent backup of your device, it is possible you can recover this lost data by restoring to this backup.

Sorry for the waiting everyone! We had a lot of stuff to pack into this HUGE update, but iconcal 2.0 with Google Sync is now live on the iTunes Store!

A looooooot of stuff coming relatively soon. We had some hiccups that slowed us down a bit, but are still super busy with the app. Been getting some great feedback - thanks for all your emails! First off -

There is a very annoying and rampant bug in IconCal 1.01 with iOS 4 devices that is causing the time selected in the “time picker” to consistently be a certain amount of hours fast or slow of what was actually selected. Apparently, this is caused by a bug that was introduced in Apple’s iOS 4 update. We’re hoping Apple will come out with a fix for this, but in the meantime, we’re seeing if there is anything we can do about it on our end. We’d like to see this bug gone just as much as you!

The 1.02 update is almost finished and adds a number of bugfixes and tweaks (hopefully we can get the aforementioned bug fixed in this update too). IconCal 1.02 will also add an oft requested feature: Any time you add a time and/or event to a day, a small black dot will appear next to the corresponding date on the month view. I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking “Gee golly willikers, Goodwicket! Didn’t you say in your app’s description that dots and colored lines were for rogues and scallywags?” Well… yes, we did. And we might have to eat our words eventually… but this dot is totally different from all those other dots. Its magic.

After the 1.02 update is finished we have plenty of updates planned afterwards as well. We plan on continuing to add both free and premium icons to IconCal, as well as adding any other highly requested features.

Next small feature/bug update 1.02

In addition to smashing a few bugs and tweaking the interface a bit (trying to make buttons easier to press, etc), the next update should include a small indicator - probably a small unobtrusive dot (i.e. | 24 • |) to the right of the day’s number - to let you know on which days you have a time/event entered. Should help a bit when trying to find those days that are a little bit busier or have an important note you need to read.
